Hot Times in Hotlanta
Oakland cemetery was the first graveyard in Atlanta. It started out as six acres plot in 1850 but has since grown to it’s current size of 48 acres. Oakland is an excellent example of a Victorian-style cemetery, and reflects the “garden cemetery” movement started and exemplified by Mount Auburn Cemetery in Massachusetts.
The biggest issue in the cemetery now is the damage done by a tornado that went right through downtown Atlanta in 2008. The tornado toppled headstones, trees, and generally caused a big mess.
